I first learned the power of gratitude over 15 years ago when I read, “Simple Abundance: A Day Book of Comfort and Joy”, by Sarah Ban Breathnach. Sarah teaches that , “There are six threads to abundant living, which when woven together produces a tapestry of contentment that wraps us in inner peace, well-being, happiness, and a sense of security. First, there is gratitude. When we do a mental and spiritual inventory of all that we have, we realize that we are rich indeed.”
When I look back through my gratitude journal a theme appears – it’s the small things, the little moments that made the list day after day: my children’s laughter, my husband’s patience, bubble baths, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the sun on my face on a winter’s day.
I’ve resumed my daily gratitude practice, and now I remember why it is so powerful. The act of gratitude is a very “in the moment” practice and it fills my heart with joy. From somewhere deep inside there is an awareness that life is abundant – if only we stop long enough to take notice.
I encourage you to start a gratitude journal, if you haven’t already. Take a few minutes at the end of each day to reflect and count your blessings.
“If the only prayer you said was thank you, that would be enough.”

Since this is the month of A to Z, I will share a great gratitude process I use when cranky. I fill in a new item for all the letters of the alphabet with something I am grateful for. I won’t necessarily do it all in one day. Spread it over a week, a few each day. Some letters are harder than others, obviously, but I find that always makes me dig deep and really look for the amazing things that happen to me.
